I created a new Yahoo group for discussions for owners of my favourite AMF-SF14 Maranda. We spun this off from the original S14 Maranda group only because the old group owner is nowhere to be found and the original group is ruined by onslaught of spam. So if you want to talk Maranda, we'd welcome you to share your story at the new group below.

The repair of Canon S40's broken LCD page has been restored by popular demand. Actually it was left off accidentally after migrating to a new server. Thanks for pointing out my error. Happy repairing :)

How University of Tronto became a pariah of a community |

Today's Toronto Star published a very eloquent article entitled "Sky falling at once-proud University of Toronto" about the current situation facing the Richmond Hill community just north of Toronto, which succumbed to the wrath of University of Toronto's lawyers. The story is long an complex, and the Star's article talks nothing of the underhanded way in which University of Toronto obtained the title to the lands, but it does shed some light on how low our educational institutions have sunk in Ontario. They have become nothing less than corporations with no morals or obligations except to .. well, no one, not even shareholders. Ask any 1st year university student and they will tell you what the university thinks of them - words like cattle and funding come to mind. And now University of Toronto has shown that it not only appears to be a profit-driven heartless corporation, it can also act like one towards an entire community. Shame.

screw metric, Canada Post goes Imperial |

Thursday, 13 December 2007 |
From Canada Post's website "The maximum weight for containers (lettertainers and flats tubs) has
been reduced from 25 kg to 22.7 kg. The measurement includes the
combined weight of the container, lid and contents." Coincidentally, 22.7kg is 50lb converted to metric. So I guess Canada Post has had it with the crazy metric system which the rest of the world somehow fancies and started to use the good old imperial system. Who needs to count in 5s and 10s when better systems exist? It's insane to know that even after 30-some years of using metric system, government agencies clearly show that don't really understand it.

GPS on York Region transit system |

Those using the VIVA Rapid Transit system in York Region may have noticed how there has been some tests done lately on how to display route names at VIVA bus stops. So instead of "blue - Newmarket" the signs said "VIVA BLUE - NEWMARKT". This has lead to speculation that the regular YRT busses will also be equipped with GPS in order to display their ETA at each stop. Well, this speculation was confiirmed today in a form of a news release. It's still to be determined what use the GPS equipment will have on 95% of the routes which lack the high-tech bus stops capable of receiving the en-route information.

Yet another year has passed. We hope you had a peaceful and loving Chistmas. Our lack of posts was directly proportional to the hectic pace of these holidays. And of course the new year is just around the corner. Once again, we want to wish all of our family, friends and all of our visitors here a very Happy New Year in 2007.
